Academy graduate receives scholarship

Pacific Learning Academy graduate receives Lillian Disney Scholarship to CalArts.

Jones opted to take advantage of the Academy’s remote study option to be able to complete his math course and participate in the New Orleans Shakespeare Festival over the summer.

James Jones, a Pacific Learning Academy graduate, was recently awarded the Lillian Disney Scholarship to the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. CalArts is the first U.S. higher educational institution to offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in both visual and performing arts.

James came to the Academy in 2016 when he needed to be able to complete a second semester geometry course, act in “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” at The New Orleans Shakespeare Festival, and also spend part of his summer overseas.

Working with his PLA instructor via Skype and working on assignments via shared Google Docs, James built a portfolio showing both his performance and mastery of the Geometry material. James completed Geometry in less than two months and then returned the following year to complete Advanced Algebra and Health, both requirements for graduation.

“Pacific Learning Academy is excited to offer the remote study option to students on the move,” states Kirsten O’Malley, Executive Director of Pacific Learning Academy. “We enjoy making learning as convenient as possible to our students, and loved being a part of James’ unique high school experience.” James graduated from Pacific Learning Academy and was recently admitted into CalArts.

Congratulations, James, on the prestigious Lillian Disney scholarship! We wish you all the best in your next chapter at CalArts.
