Pacific Learning Academy is a year-round school and tutoring service that hires instructors for middle and high school core courses (including languages), tutoring of all subjects, and SAT/ACT test preparation. When you apply, you’ll mark the subject area(s) that you are proficient to tutor or teach at the high school level. Instructors who are not able to tutor or teach across subject areas will not be considered.

We require a “season” commitment (staying until the end of the school year and/or the summer season to ensure continuity for our students). We hope you’ll stay even longer!

Minimum Requirements
4-year degree (or equivalent) as a minimum
Teaching certificate or master’s degree preferred (but not required)
Ability to work with students of all abilities 6th to 12th grade, including ADD/ADHD
Computer and internet capabilities for remote lessons
Webcam, mic, and comfort using Zoom platform during COVID-19
Available at least 3x/week (Mon-Thurs are the most popular lesson days)
Weekend availability desired, but not required
Reliable transportation for in-home tutoring [N/A during COVID-19 pandemic]
Clean WSP background check
The ability to offer a minimum of 10 set hours you can make available to Academy students.

Essential Abilities & Behaviors:
Be proficient in all levels of the subject(s) you tutor/teach (to AP/IB level best)
Able to communicate in a timely manner via official Academy email
Motivated to become familiar with local district textbooks and curriculum
Positive, upbeat, and encouraging
Provide the best tutoring/teaching experience our clients have ever had
Persuade reluctant learners to find joy in the subject again!

Working Hours:

  • Because hours are not guaranteed, new instructors may only have 1-4 hours per week to start.
  • Instructors tell us the daily parameters of their availability (i.e. Mondays from 2 to 6pm)
  • If you can effectively teach high levels of more than 2 subject areas, there is room to grow into 20+ hours/week or more.
  • Once students begin their Academy program, they will typically stay with their same schedule and instructor for the rest of the year, but sports schedules or academic needs may change.

During the academic school year, families typically request once or twice a week, sometime between 3 and 8pm (Mon – Thurs with some weekend requests). Because we are an accredited school, we also have daytime students during the school year (plus Running Start and Homeschool students). During the summer season, families typically see us between 10 and 4pm (Mon-Thurs) or during weekends. Your schedule stays the same every week. You need to be available for at least 3 weekdays to fit our students’ scheduling needs. Academy instructors typically work between 10 and 30 hours a week, depending on their availability, their skill set, and the number of students we have in their particular subject(s).

Job Duration: Training begins immediately upon hire. Position lasts until the end of the season, which is August 31st for summer-only instructors, or the end of the school year (end-of-June) for year-round instructors. There is an opportunity for summer work for instructors joining us during the school year. Successful instructors are always welcome to rejoin the team the following fall.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all lessons are currently synchronous, face-to-face, virtual lessons utilizing Zoom. The Academy is not an online school (which typically does not include real-time interactions). When it’s possible again, we will resume in-person instruction held in Issaquah and Sammamish homes, libraries or the Academy administrative office in Sammamish, WA. Some families will elect to continue instruction via Zoom. In-person lessons will only resume when it is safe to do so (determined by the State Board of Attention, the Academy leadership team, as well as the instructors as their comfort is our highest priority).

Environmental conditions:
Instructors may (currently) work from anywhere, utilizing Zoom for customized lessons.
Instructors will need an area free of distractions or extraneous noise.
Backgrounds should be professional/neat and/or virtual backgrounds will need to be appropriate for a learning environment.
When we are able, we will resume working in student homes, local libraries or the Academy administrative office in Sammamish.

Necessary travel:
Instructors are not currently meeting students in their homes. All lessons are virtual until further notice. Once we resume in-home lessons, instructors will need reliable, private transportation and the ability to meet students in the Sammamish and Issaquah area. At that time, the Academy will resume drive time compensation.
